I think you mean "serial port". You have to configure the
parameters of the serial port on the printer, then get a printcap
entry and put it in /etc/printcap.
You may also have to do "mkserv print". It can get involved, I
think someone was working on a document summarizing all the necessary steps.
Here's the printcap we use at ESG (not for an HP, but should work):
default|PostScript|your-printer-name-here:\
:lp=/dev/tty00:sd=/var/spool/printer/your-printer-name-here:\
:rp=your-printer-name-here:rm=your-printer-host-here.mit.edu:\
:lf=/var/spool/printer/your-printer-name-here/your-printer-name-here-log:\
:af=/var/spool/printer/your-printer-name-here/your-printer-name-here-acct:\
:br#19200:rw:fc#0000374:fs#0000003:xc#0:xs#0040040:mx#0:sf:sb:\
:if=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psif:\
:of=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psof:gf=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psgf:\
:nf=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psnf:tf=/usr/athena/lib/ps/pstf:\
:rf=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psrf:vf=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psvf:\
:cf=/usr/athena/lib/ps/pscf:df=/usr/athena/lib/ps/psdf:\
:ra=true:sh=true:sd=/var/spool/printer/your-printer-name-here:ka#0:pc#10
Note this runs at 19200 baud. Low-level PC's tend to only go to
9600 baud reliably, but I've found that workstations can frequently run
at 19200 baud with no trouble.
/dev/tty00 is the 25 pin port on the DEC5000/25.
By the way, if you manage to get a setup where you can print
transparently from Athena AND a Mac, I'd be interested in hearing about
it, as I am trying to configure something similar.
