I spoke at length this morning with Susan Personnette, project manager for
the Tang Building.
The shut down on Friday had been planned by the contractors for a couple of
daysprior to Friday. Unfortunately, while plant operations center had been
informed about this somehow the information did not get to everyone within
plant operations and as a result did not get out to the plant shutdown
notification list. The actual work that required the shutdown was done on
Saturday. Water was supposed to be turned back on early this morning but
they discovered a couple of leaks and are currently dealing with those.
I have asked for the contractors detailed plans for shutdowns covering the
period between now and May 17 (day before finals begin). Susan will get
those to us.The major concern at this point may not be the planned
shutdowns but the "emergency" shutdowns that occur as they run into
construction problems.
I made it clear to her that from now on the availability of workstations is
critical issue and that further shutdowns are going to cause significant
heat.
I'll keep you posted.

Things are off to a great start across the street.
It's unfortunate that we had to close the cluster
at such a busy time of year.

Subject: E51 chilled H2O out for weekend
Plant just called. Construction folks turned off chilled
water for all of E51 (cluster in basement...). Plant is
assuming at present that this will be for the weekend.
More info at 3-1500.

I have checked on this facility and have found the temperature already at
80 degrees and slowly climbing. According to P.P. the chilled water would
be
restored sometime on Monday 4/25/94. It sounds like the Construction
company
at this location did not communicate this chilled water shutdown in a
timely
manner to P.P. I have decided to close down the E51-007 cluster. All
hardware
has been cleanly shutdown and powered off as well as the access code.
Carlton has helped me shutdown the cluster, as well as posting signs. Signs
state that the E51-007 cluster has closed on 4/22 8:00pm and that the
cluster opening is unknown due to P.P.
Have forwarded to the appropriate people.
