Ya'll came and replaced the hard disk of one of the political science
DECStation 5000/25's, named rousseau. I've now been trying to log in
as root, run the mkserv program and re-establish the passwd and
passwd.local files on the drive. I'm having a heck of a time logging-in
as root. I've logged in once as root, using the default password. Then,
I'll log out and log back in. The default password then doesn't work--
repeatedly, and after trying all the obvious things to see if I'm doing
this right (like trying the cap lock, trying to old password that used to
be on the machine, etc.) The strange thing is that I came back after an
hour, and the default password worked. BUT, when I logged-off and then
logged back on, it didn't work.

The error I'm getting is that the root password is invalid.

Any idea?
