Tom suspected something to do with the Sloan PC lab from some logs of
hardware addresses the NOC machine maintains. I contacted John Maglio
who pointed me at Nate Charles.
I got vmail back from Nate Charles. Seems they have a "public pc
cleanup" thing that runs and is supposed to (among other things) reset
the IP addr of the pc based on the algorithm of adding some number to
a base of 82! So sometimes things get scrod and the number they add
is zero. Evidently sometimes things get scrod in the other direction
as well since the old printer addr was above their range.
I'll be talking some more with Nate on Monday.
