News was flakey and just plain unavailable most of the day. The problem
appears to be that the SIPB news server, a DS5000/25, is overloaded.
I have asked folks at the SIPB to investigate what can be done to
improve our ability to support this service. The immediate need is for a
higher performance news server.
To get things back in service we made the following swapout this
evening. We replaced buddy-guy.mit.edu, a DS5000/200 with a DS5000/25
that we got from Lou. Buddy-guy is the Techinfo server and frankly
doesn't need to run on the higher performance DS5000/200. We reloaded
buddy-guy (it was running software that was way out of date) and
delivered it to the SIPB folks. They will be installing it as
news.mit.edu over the next day or so.
Sorry if this message seems a little incoherent, its late and I am
tired. If anyone has questions, feel free to talk to me tomorrow
(Tuesday).
