Hello, I'm Daniel Bromberg and I am taking over the position as Athena chair
which Jin Choi (jsc) previously held. We have one serious and one possibly
serious problem with machines here at the ZBT cluster. Jin informs me that
gbroagfran.mit.edu has suffered a hard error and is inoperable. Also,
hagbard-celine.mit.edu is dropping a significant fraction of its packets, and
often loses contact with users' fileservers. I collected ping statistics on
all four operating machines, from both a local machine and a campus machine,
for comparison among all four operative machines;

Local (/etc/ping from bard.MIT.EDU):

----dobbs.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
54 packets transmitted, 51 packets received, 5% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 3/5/43

----hagbard-celine.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
56 packets transmitted, 53 packets received, 5% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 3/4/71

----yog-soggoth.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
59 packets transmitted, 57 packets received, 3% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 3/5/85

----slack.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
59 packets transmitted, 58 packets received, 1% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 3/4/76

Campus: (/etc/ping -v from carbonara.MIT.EDU)

----slack.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
61 packets transmitted, 60 packets received, 1% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 35/55/218

----HAGBARD-CELINE.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
63 packets transmitted, 50 packets received, 20% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 35/35/46

----yog-soggoth.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
60 packets transmitted, 55 packets received, 8% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 35/36/50

// NOTE: yog-soggoth was the only machine to spew hex codes as above
// in these tests, and only in responding to a campus machine.

----dobbs.MIT.EDU PING Statistics----
61 packets transmitted, 56 packets received, 8% packet loss
round-trip (ms) min/avg/max = 35/37/66

// Hagbard-celine is a serious problem with a worst of 20% packet loss

Although these machines are going away in January, it is important that
they remain in operating condition until then, especially with finals coming
soon. Please get back to me as soon as possible, by phone (731-2685), e-mail,
or in person to actually take a look at the machines.

							Thanks,
							Daniel
