There is a scrawled sign nearby saying "The Mouse does not Work on
this workstation"; since the sign does not go on to say "I have
reported it", I am assuming that no one has bothered to yet.
The problem is not that the mouse is seriously broken. It is the
round kind with two tilted discs underneath (one to detect and
translate the horizontal component of a motion, and the other for the
vertical.) The mouse pointer moves as it should when I flip the mouse
over and turn the discs by hand, but it does not move at all when I
attempt to use the mouse normally, because the discs have been pressed
too far into the mouse to actually touch the table. It looks like it
wouldn't be hard to fix (if I knew how to take the mouse apart without
breaking it; I won't try.)
I don't know what does this to the DEC mouses. It is only a minor
nuisance to text-oriented persons such as myself, but probably quite
inconvenient for people who like pulling down menus all over the place
(or playing games that use a mouse.)
