Dennis:

As I read your message about the modem pool bug list, you would have
administrative control over a private list "bug-modem-pool," with
(probably) the same set of members that were previously part of the
bug-V32 list.

Your message about the modem pool bug list started me thinking (and
talking to others involved in help desk support) about the kinds of
problems that the MIT community associates with the 5ESS modem pool, and
the repercussions of modem pool problems on the MIT community and on the
i/s help desks that serve the MIT community.

The 5ESS modem pool is a resource that is sponsored by Telecomm. Modem
pool problems affect not only persons trying to access Athena, but
every person in the MIT community who uses a DADN or any other modem
pool addressable resource.

It would seem that the name "bug-modem-pool" might inaccurately suggest
to the MIT community that the person(s) administering this list will see
and address all problems with the modem pool that are reported to the
list. That would not be the case, unless that list included me, Peter,
5help, Mitch, the CSRs, and Mort.

I would also suggest that that a bug list called "bug-modem-pool" should
also contain members of all i/s help groups, since problems with the
modem pool affect so many customers and substantially increase the work
load of all i/s help desks, particularly the 3-0001, 3-4357 and the
3-4101 help desks. Other i/s help desks should be made aware that modem
pool problems have appeared, since, for example, customers may assume
that the problems are modem- or software-related, and call 3-0001; or
that they are mainframe-related, and call 3-7230. If dialing from home,
a member of the MIT community may even report the "problem" to New
England Telephone, and incur an unnecessary service charge!

If there is some specific aspect of modem pools related to Athena for
which you need to gather information or trouble reports, then it would
be appropriate for DCNS to administer a mail list named for that topic.
However, the name "bug-modem-pool" implies a topic too specific to be
reasonably administered by someone outside of Telecomm, and of too
general interest to be limited to the small group that were subscribed
to bug-V.32. (If I seem to be implying that I would assume
responsibility for the list named, "bug-modem-pool," that is indeed the
case.)

I'll be happy to discuss this further....! And, if you think I may not
on the right track, please let me know!

Connie
