While looking at the bug reports in netprob I noticed:

System name:		m4-167-7
Type and version:	SPARC/Classic 7.6G (plus partial update)
Display type:		cgthree

the "7.6G (plus partial update)" caught my eye. In this state the
machine will not take the next update.
