Colors on this machine are messed up!

Hi,
I have a very peculiar problem here.
Everything is fine, until I do a "xsetroot -solid '#1f2f3f'", in
the intention to change the background to a hue of blue that I like. But
almost all my colors get "messed up" after that command. I do a "xcmap" to
look at the colormap and find that after doing the "xsetroot", a hue of
blue (probably the blue I specified in the xsetroot command) is added to
every other color cell. Doing "xsetroot" again would not have the same
effect.
I don't know if it is a problem with this particular machine or
with the X server. There is no other free Sun here at the moment for me to
test out the same thing. Hope that you can check.
