Just to let you know where things stand...Kevin (field service) called,
we talked about the problem. He's going to try to get me some info so
I can try to recover data from the disk over the weekend. We're going to
talk again on Monday, and decide how to proceed.
Basically, the only things on chickadee now are the volumes that were
on yeserday (that we've restored from tape made Aug 16). The data I hope
to get off the disk is changes made in those volumes between Aug 16 and
yesterday. This is a frustrating problem, because the disk seems to have
a single bad block which prevents mounting the entire /vicepa partition.
(Even more frustrating, the partition can be mounted ro, and you can _see_
the volume headers there...but the data is basically inaccessible at this
point.) I haven't given up hope yet, and will send mail as soon as the
volumes are back or I give up, whichever happens first.
