The main reason I rebooted the workstations was that there were 5 in the room
of 19 that were being used by the same person. This made them unavailable
to others. Out of the 5 only one was at a finished state, I had no way of
telling when the others would be done.
Unfortunatly many people will not log another out, even if there is no sign
of a person at the table (books, papers, etc.).

Aside from the root logins, was there anything unusual about
the machines? Was root logged in remotely?
All these statements:
.....
Finished line 470 (1197720 rays)
Finished line 480 (1240160 rays)
Eye rays: 1259712
Shadow rays: 5491668
......
were probably created by a highly computationally intensive
computer animation program. The person(s) using the machines
were likely to be just doing some work, not messing with the
machines.
I don't see any reason for rebooting those machines. Sounds
like logout would have worked if someone needed to use them.
