To elaborate on problem 2, it seems to have little if anything to do with
graphics, and does spit up an error in the usr/adm/messages file. I just
had the workstation effectively lock up for about 45 minutes (in fact I was
just about to hit the halt switch when it came back to life) after putting a
floppy in the drive. The error produced in the messages file goes along
these lines (as usual repeated about 100,000 times):

I just *HATE* when my targets get disconnected.... Its enought to make you
want to synch a disk....
