To: hotline@ATHENA.MIT.EDU Date: Wed, 22 Aug 90 05:34:51 EDT From: John Carr <jfc@ATHENA.MIT.EDU> The megapel display adapater in my RT failed today. It was displaying some colors wrong; when I rebooted hoping that would reset the board, the machine hung after loading the kernel. It also hung when I tried to run diagnostics (showing "66" on the LEDs). The machine is now up, minus the megapel board. The board is currently on the chair next to the hotline desk, with a label "jfc" on it. Under the megapel board is an RT SCSI cable. When the system came up after I removed the megapel board, the kernel did not recognize the Athens drives. I can think of 3 possibile reasons: (1) while failing, the megapel adapter damaged the SCSI adapter (2) as I was moving the system to remove the megapel, I damaged the cable (3) the cable failed for other reasons (I had to turn off the drives; I have seen this cause drive failures in the past). The cable is labeled "bad?".
