the compose character key looks produces a space every time
I hit it. While this is odd, two things make it more odd:
a) if I hold it down, the space doesn't repeat.
b) it still functions normally, i.e. I hit Meta-f in emacs
and I get a space when I hit the Meta then the cursor
moves correctly when I hit the f.
plus, the space bar on this keyboard squeaks sometimes.
