Hi Christie-

Could you make up some signs worded something like:

Do to Network repairs on Tues 4-6-93 starting at
8am ending 10am there could be a 5 to 10min network
outage.
- - -------------------------------------------------------
Op could you setup an equivalent MOTD.
- - -------------------------------------------------------
Steve could you page me when work is completed.
- - -------------------------------------------------------
I'll be on site when work starts.
- - -------------------------------------------------------
I don't think it will be necessary to close the cluster.

JJ

Subject: W20 network work

Hi gang,

I feel as if we have a good plan with which to go forward with work
for the MCC on Tuesday, 4/6 at 8AM.

The plan is to replace an existing MRXI repeater (which serves the MCC
and the Sala de Puerto Rico) in the basement phone closet with an MMAC
chassis repeater capable of serving 48 ports.

The second repeater in that closet (the MRXI which provides the fiber
feed for the building net) will not be touched, nor will the coaxial
cable relocated at this time. We will schedule the latter task for
sometime in the summer, perhaps to coincide with the deployment
schedule for the W20 Athena cluster.

The work in the closet on Tuesday morning may result in a short (5-10
second) building outage while some cables get swapped; Kim has agreed
to make certain there will be no AFS backups running at that time.

The work to be done carries a very low risk. In addition, a member of
the network operations staff will be on hand to monitor the network
for any problems which may occurr.
