The X server, /etc/ttys, and /etc/athena/login/config are all
basically the same as that on an installed Maxine. The problem
was that these are not automatically installed/customized to be
the same as on a Maxine because the display hardware was not
recognized by the install script (or update script). This is
fixed in the 7.5 sources (so the next major update will work
for him).
The only thing that the next major update won't fix is the installation
procedure, since it required a newer install image on oregano, which
can probably replace the other image. The image that I built that
allowed his machine to be installed includes all display types and
hardware configurations that I know about, including DS3100, DS5000,
and some other display configurations that nobody has asked us about.
