I've asked Lorraine to pull together a report that indicates the current
status of printers and print servers by department including who's paying
for what. Once we have this report then several of us need to sit down
with ACS and figure out what they want to do in terms of migrating these
departments from the current printer strategy to the new printer strategy.
I want to make sure that we know what the impact will be on departments,
that the right people have considered funding alternatives, and that the
message on printers is communicated clearly to the affected departments
preferably by Naomi and Greg.

Joanne and I brought this up during our meeting with ChemE last
Thursday. We informed them of the new printing strategy and briefly
told them that they would either have to replace the printers or pick
up the cost of the printserver and telephone lines that are currently
being paid for by DCNS. I'm not sure this registered with them - they
tend to hear something different than we think we are saying - in this
case they may have heard "ACS will be giving us new printers".
We have a similar situation with EECS - though there they may have
moved some of the printers to non-Athena workstations. I'm pretty
sure DCNS is still paying for the phone lines. We should make sure
that departments are quoted appropriately for printer maintenance for
FY94 - AND that we get the cost of the phone lines out of the DCNS
cluster account. Perhaps it would be better to just remove the phone
lines and install a uVAX server for each printer... well, probably not
- we should convince the departments or ACS that they should buy new
printers!
