1. I would rather leave the printers where they are presently located.
Actually, I wouldn't mind moving pal-ps to the same bench (or one
nearby) as pal-hp. It would probably be more convenient for my
TAs (and also the 6.111 students) if it were nearer the TA offices.
2. I will be happy to supply RS 232 cables to connect the present
printers to a new print server. Marty Hughes, 3-4674,
marty@athena will make up the cables.
3. I agree with dkk's suggestion that an appropriate location for the
new print server is in the cage with palserv.mit.edu and
pal.mit.edu.
4. I also agree with dkk's suggestion that the name for the new print
server could be pal-p
5. I presently have two VSIIs, namely pal1 and pal2 and would be
happy to have either one replaced with a VS3100, thus releasing it
to be a print server.
6. There are now three laser printers:
pal-ps which is a Postscript LN03
pal-ln03 which is an older non-Postscript ln03 with memory cartridge
pal-hp which is an HP Laserjet II.
7. At the present time, there is no real inconvenience, BUT it is
highly desirable, i.e., essential, that printing service be
restored before the beginning of the fall term.
8. Rita's mail said that pal5 and pal6 are presently at 6.3B. That
may well be true, but I can't tell as they both refuse to
activate, giving an error comment that they "can't resolve name".
9. pal11 (unless it has been fixed in the past two days) activates
and works for a little bit and then gives a panic message about a
mapping error or something and then reboots itself.
As far as I know pal1, pal2, and all of the rest of the VS2000s
are working well.
10. If you agree (i.e., decide upon) that the new print server should
be in the cage, then we should run another AC power line there so
it is on a separate breaker. Charles Paton, 3-4635, can arrange
for the AC wiring to be done.
11. I will be at MIT until this Monday, July 17. But then I am gone
on vacation for two weeks. It would really be a nice surprise to
see the printers in operation when I get back. In my absence (or
otherwise) Jim Kirtley, kirtley@athena, will be glad to make any
decisions on behalf of 6.111 concerning the printer situation.
Thanks very much for noticing our printer problem and taking steps to
fix it.
