I don't think moving the third printer (the HP LaserJet) is an option.
Moving the other two, on the other hand, would probably require more
counter space than the lab can spare in that area.
The reason that one printer really has to stay where the HP now is, is
that most of the activity of 6.111 students during most of the
semester is centered around that printer. That's where the teaching
assistants have their offices, and where students wait to ask them
questions. There's also some heavily used special equipment (PAL
programmers) in that area.
I think the best solution will probably be to run a cable from the
LaserJet to the other end of the lab (near the other two printers),
and to put the server in the computer cage with PAL and PALSERV,
connecting all the Athena-served printers to one machine. If last
fall was at all typical for 6.111's use of printers, this solution
would probably reduce the downtime of the printers by an order of
magnitude...
For the printserver, may I suggest either the name "PAL-P" (following
tradition) or "PROM" (which is fitting for a printer or printserver,
but might get confused with those silly dances that high-school
students take so seriously)?
