I agree with Tom; I suspect either a drive or controller error with
"podge"; I, too, have seen an error describing a "hardware error" with
no indications as to where on the disk the error occurred.

I have also found, sometimes, that certain blocks were being reported as
bad by rzdisk on one run, but during the replacement attempt, it
considered them good.

I would advocate the replacement of the drive/controller (both wouldn't
be a bad idea, either).
