Project Name: Longjobs
Team Members: Bob Basch, Abby Fox/Carter Snowden, Ted McCabe
Report Period: December 2001
Project Notebook: http://web.mit.edu/longjobs/notebook/
Accomplishments this period:
- Completed fall term testing, analyzed usage and feedback. Some
of the students in a participating class seemed to have trouble
getting started with the service and/or assignment; we believe
the best approach is to be more pro-active in dealing with the
T.A. and/or professor. We will also improve documentation on
testing scripts, job dependencies, and the machines in the slave
pool.
- Brought Linux slave policy question to Owls. It was agreed to go
ahead with the needed work by Ops, but to schedule it at low
priority. Once the work is done, Owls will reconsider whether/when
to go ahead.
- Completed implementation of job and queue status changes.
- Implemented encrypted connections with both clients and slaves.
- Implemented three "fudge" factors dealing with the quota system,
as dynamically set server attributes. We can use these to avoid
problems with users running out of quota off-hours.
- Investigated possible problems reverting to a backed-up copy
of the master spool area, in recovery from a disk disaster.
We will document procedures for dealing with any changes occurring
since that backup.
- Began work on a program to analyze capacity; determined need to
add desired platform(s) to the group/user record.
- Fixed a fatal server bug, and a couple of other problems found in
testing.
- Completed draft of internal support documentation.
Goals for next period:
- Complete remaining development tasks.
- Deploy latest software for testing.
- Continue work on additional support and documentation needs.
- Monitor use by IAP testers, and get feedback.
- Look at Sun's Disksuite for the master; buy additional disk(s).
- Plan for roll-out.
Team Dynamics:
- Abby is leaving MIT; Carter will fill the FL/support role on the
team, at least temporarily.
