This month's accomplishments (August / September 2001)
- Established project notebook and obtained webmail locker
- Kicked off installation work with following goals:
* Create hesiod lookup of PO box
* Explore what type of hardware this will require
* Learn if we can install without a database, maybe recording simple
preferences with session keys
* Document installation as well as complexity of system
- Identified Training & Pubs team member (Lee Ridgway)
- Borrowed faster test machine for development
- Established 'alpha' installation without a database for use and testing by IS
Next Month's Plans (October 2001)
- Continue development, updating default installation for users based on
user/team feedback
- Work on enabling other desired features, including
* user notification of session expiration
* identifying system defaults, such defaulting unspecified addresses to
@mit.edu
* pulling in full name from hesiod info for From line (possibly)
* creating new color palettes
- Install with oracle and postgres databases to explore behavior
- Determine type of hardware needed for production
- Begin user documentation
Issues
- Pulling in name from hesiod results in occasional unexpected from lines,
since it's another name source (example - Kretch's from line includes his
call sign: From: "James M Kretchmar KB1DBU" <kretch@mit.edu>)
- Need to determine advantages / disadvantages to using a database for
WebMail. It would make the system more complex, and we want to be careful
about setting up user expectations for what we will and will not store.
