Project Name: MIT Cable Television
Project Leader: Randy Winchester
Report Date: August 1, 2001
Accomplishments:
* First team meeting for 7/10/01.
* MIT web certificates key was generated and provided to FES web
contractor.
* Investigated Residential Life web pages linking to MIT Cable and FES
pages.
* Checked with MIT Facilities to determine if dished can be mounted to
elevator shafts. MIT Facilities is following up with Factory Mutual to
determine if the proposed mounting meets their requirements.
* FES has produced a job description for a Resident Technical Assistant
to provide off-hours support. The job description will be posted to the
Student Employment Office job board on the web.
* FES granted permission to MIT to include The Research Channel in the
free basic channel line up.
* Channel processors for eight Boston broadcast channels have been
installed in the headend. Four of the eight channels are operational.
Plans for August 2001:
* Produce press releases, web pages, advertisements, banners and
posters to notify clients of the new service.
* Add The Research Channel to the channel line up.
* Implement technical portion of the project necessary to deliver service.
* Prepare for cutover on September 1, 2001.
Issues:
* FES may not utilize MIT web certificates based on difficulty with
implementation. This issues has been brought to Jeff Schiller's attention.
* Residential Life web pages currently do not carry any information
about any services available in the living groups. I was told that
Residential Life will be updating their pages in the near future either to
include this content or link to service provider web sites.
* There is no deadline for delivering an information mailer. Mailer
distribution will be through living group email lists.
* There is no provision to provide discounts for multiple set top boxes
assigned to one account. This was not anticipated as a problem as the
current cable provider has a policy of providing only one box per account,
but they have made some exceptions and assigned multiple boxes to some
customers. One dormitory housemaster who has three set top boxes has
already indicated that the rate increase and charges for multiple boxes is
an issue for him. This has been brought to the attention of DSL. Also,
Carl Seagren has requested that each house manager provide a set top box
count for each housemaster.
* One antenna cable to the roof has been cut, and antennas on one of
the three roof masts are blocked by a satellite dish. New cables will be
installed and some antennas moved to other masts to improve functionality.
