Accomplishments in April
------------------------
Foremost in April the Pismere team passed a major milestone.
Friday, 30 April, after more than two years of work and much effort,
we delivered Pismere machines outside of the development team in W92.
Significantly, we installed four machines in the non-IS pilot site,
the Department of Urban Studies and planning.
Initial deployment results look very good. Certainly we are
encountering a new bug or two and a few missing utilities, which will
keep us very busy for the near term. Therefore, this announcement
might appear to give the team reason to rest, but we are now moving
into a production role that may keep us working as hard as ever.
The deployed Pismere machine uses MIT infrastructure Kerberos, DNS,
Zephyr, per-subnet DHCP and a production Moira server. We are working
closely with Athena Server Operarions and NetOps.
Please join me in wishing the Pismere Team a job well done.
For further details on efforts in Pismere development, servers,
documentation, plus work with Net Ops and Athena Server Ops, follow
the April meeting minutes at

Goals for May
-------------
- Continue to fine-tune Moira performance.
- Redesign the group policy structure and fill it.
- Write new documents:
MSIs and links to MS info;
Some Dos and Don'ts;
Naming Conventions;
Group Policy applications.
- Deliver a temporary fix to get KLP ports installed in the delivered
machine.
- Finish and publish final CSG documents.
- Support DUSP.
- Get Alex P running in order to build apps in AFS.
- Kevin is looking at our internally-developed ftp, and should compare
it to kftp.
- Continue MS consulting on RIS.
- Kent Post of LCS still needs a meeting with Paul and Tom to explain
the difficulties of W2K domain servers.
Longer Term Goals
-----------------
- Get help from Garry and TomC to put non-null Kerberos instances into
Moira.
- Generic ftp requirements.
- Release Zephyr, Plop and KLPR.
- Generic logging library proposal - package NT syslogger for other
schools, and get tech pubs help from here or a requesting school.
- We need to do further work to populate AD attributes, such as white
pages info, from the MIT data warehouses.
- Continue planning post-pilot work.
- Work with MS to customize RIS.
Issues
------
- ITS is underway Will it again transfer resources from Pismere a few
weeks? This may slip pilot debugging.
- When shall we get MS SP and Hotfix source?
- How do we sync our AFS code with Transarc?
- When does the AUI Dash & gnome require Pismere revision?
Additional comments
-------------------
Team members deserve congratulations and a chance to step back and
enjoy this rollout.
