Project Name: Freshman Housing Lottery
Project Leader: Jag Patel / Susan Minai-Azary (reg98 team)
Report Date: May 14, 2001
URL: http://web.mit.edu/housinglottery/docs/

IS has run the freshman housing lottery for a few years now when the
freshman get to campus. To prepare for next year when all students will
have their permanent housing assignment made before they get to campus, we
are running the lottery twice:
1) over the summer to choose their "temporary" dormitory for orientation
2) near the end of orientation, the lottery will run again for freshman to
enter new preferences for a permanent assignment

This month's accomplishments (April 2001)
- Most of April has been spent working with ITAG and the reg98 team to
determine an authentication method for pre-frosh and support for it. The
result: pre-frosh have been mailed the kerberos account "coupon" in the
early May admissions packet, allowing them to get their kerberos / Athena
account during the summer. Pre-frosh will enter the lottery by
authenticating with their username and password --- not certificates --
this year. (FYI - the coupons are also being mailed to all grad students
during the summer, allowing them to get their accounts earlier if they
choose.)

- Worked with Housing to determine summer and fall lottery requirements &
desired features; created mockups for development

- Brought last year's lottery server on-line for reference and modifications

Next Month's Plans (May 2001)
- Bring lottery server on-line for testing (mid/end-May)
- Keep tracking support issues / wins around enabling accounts during the
summer

Issues
- Tight timeline for very visible, remotely accessed freshman application
