General
-------

The cluster machines deployment to DUSP is close enough to touch but
not quite ready. The major features we need to deliver to DUSP are
DNS coverage from W92, to N42, W20, 9 and perhaps 39; and an RIS image
with the AFS loopback/redirector. Applications in lockers awaits AFS.

Accomplishments in January
--------------------------

- DNS: Since current campus DNS needs upgrading, TomC and Chris will
first implement an upgrade, which we expect to take a couple more
working days, and *should* support the W2K domain.

- AFS: Thanks to Davie, the loopback, a way to get AFS working with
\\afs instead of \\machine-afs, is in AFS 3.6, but it still needs an
installer. We made sure we do not break leash and aklog.

- We and SWRT released KfW2.1.

- We met with Microsoft Consulting Services to work on the RIS
process.

- Tom and Lisa Robinson test Zephyr and KLP. Ongoing alpha work with
Jon Hunt of SRT, TechPubs, and HelpDesk for Plop.

- Obtained servers from MS and Dell, half of which are installed.

- Jamie's proposal to MS, requesting permission to distribute KLP to
other schools, is at MS awaiting response.

- John Williams and Tom Grayson met with Paul and Tom discussing the
difficulties of running W2K server.

- Paul did ITS resource planning this week, and we have not heard
instructions to stop from Jim, so Paul, Danilo, and Joe transfer time
from Pismere to ITS.

- Paul and Dave worked on plans for Corporate Time.

- Dave has Moira and Data Warehouse populating and synchronizing
in order.

- Joe revised ntsyslog under NT4. Paul tested it.

- Joe wrote up policies and ACLs. He wrote an access_on/_off service.
He implemented the .winlogon.bat and .winlogoff.bat scripts and put
them into the policies for the RIS container. He also made the My
Computer icon reflect the actual machine name.

- Qing compared the W2K Computer schema to the Moira schema. Garry
told her the Moira schema will support populating the AD Computer
Management data structure.

- Qing did some winmerge UI work. She begins a service to watch for
an failed login events.

- We pursue a served MSDN with Mary Ann Ladd at LCS.

- Jamie improvements to addmon and delmon that make the KLP installer
more robust.

- Ian fixed Zephyr name addressing.

- Luke worked on AFS compatibility and fixed a leash bug with AFS
tokens.

Goals for February
------------------

- Look at longterm Academic Computing plans.

- DHCP: discuss with TomC whether we can support multiple RIS servers.

- Get Garry and TomC to help us to put non-null Kerberos instances
into Moira.

- Dave and Qing plan to work with Paul on ashpool to test schema
extensions.

- Look to review pushed maintenance scripts. Danilo will present an
initial presentation and lead the discussion.

- Kevin is looking at our internally-developed ftp, and should compare
it to kftp.

- Continue MS consulting to implement an RIS reinstall method to
auto-detect the computer container and a router address.

- Kent Post of LCS and Phil Thompson od DUSP may need a meeting with
Paul and Tom to explain the difficulties of W2K domain servers.

Longer Term Goals
-----------------

- Generic ftp requirements.

- Release Zephyr, Plop and KLPR.

- Generic logging library proposal - package NT syslogger for other
schools, and get tech pubs help from here or a requesting school.

- We need to do further work to populate AD attributes, such as white
pages info, from the MIT data warehouses.

- Continue planning post-pilot work.

Issues
------
- Will ITS work continue to transfer resources from Pismere a few weeks? This
  slips our IAP pilot date.
- When shall we get MS SP and Hotfix source?
- How do we sync our AFS code with Transarc?
- When does the AUI Dash & gnome require Pismere revision?

Additional comments
-------------------
Barring unforseen AFS or DNS obstacles, we should be able to deliver
in a few weeks.
