I have inadvertantly caused some grief for which I apologize. Not long
after I posted Al Weis' alleged comment about gigabit service from the
Chronicle of Higher Education, I received a message from Dave Farber. Not
looking at the header carefully I assumed that this message came to me
from the list so I replied thinking it would send Al Weis' Clarification
BACK to the list! I was wrong. My next posting to the list will be this
correspondence.
It is true that in the first column of the Chronicle article quotation
marks are used while in the last two columns they are not used. In all
three columns the words are Al Weis said .... But again to be explicit it
was in the third column where Al Weis said a billion bits within two year
and this column had no quote marks. A significant nuance but one I think
that most readers would likely miss.
Again in conversation on Friday evening Al Weis said to me that he had
been MISQUOTED that OS12 within two years was the target, that this was
620 or 640 some megabits (i don't remember the exact figure), and that
breaching a gigabit would take some major R&D and major money.
