Who can say for sure how long it will last. It takes a pretty deep
pocket to build an infrastructure like that unless you have 1) Government
financial support or, 2) Government concessions. Look at the Railroad
system as an example. And, as history has taught us, abuses are common.
Of course, a logical alternative would be a partnership of other Inter-
exchange Carriers (ATT for example) and the Regional Bell Operating
Companies. But the cable TV industry (and a few others including other,
less regulated interexchange carriers) are pushing Congress hard not
to let this happen.
It seems that someone's idea of a level playing field is everyone allowed
to play except the guy whose backyard it is.
