	Will what is being learned now be easily transferrable to SMDS
	and ATM applications?

In my opinion, not really - the T3 backbone is just like the T1
backbone, only faster (point to point bit pipes which connect IP
routers in a single network). ATM and SMDS transport of IP networks
poses some interesting routing problems which do not really occur in
the existing situation. This is what the "IP over Large Public Data
Networks" (IPLPDN - pronounced "eye plop down") working group of the
IETF is working on.

	Is there any danger of 6 months or a year from now of the
	current investment by the NSF in the DS-3 infrastructure being
	perceived as obsolete?

Only if we can get something equivalent for less money, or faster for
the same or less money. Ceteris paribus, of course.
