NEW YORK (AP) -- British Telecom PLC is announcing what it calls the first
service to provide corporations one-stop shopping for private worldwide
telephone and data communications networks.

Under the service, a new BT subsidiary called Syncordia Corp. will allow
corporations to "outsource" their phone networks, much as many companies
already do with their computer needs.

BT will own and manage the phone networks for these companies, allowing
customers to pay for worldwide phone service with one bill. The service will
provide voice, data and video.

"Our customers no longer want to develop and manage their own private
communications networks," BT Chairman Iain Vallance said.

Syncordia, based in Atlanta, is building a worldwide communications network
to offer the service. BT said it will be one of the largest such facilities.

BT said it is discussing possible investments and partnership agreements in
Syncordia with Japan's Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, and with Deutsche
Bundespost Telekom of Germany.
