You have one of the best authorities on using packet radio to access the
Internet currently visiting (and building his next project) at your campus:
Steve Roberts, who built a ham/Mac/Sun/satlink-equiped bike and then rode
it around/across the country for a couple of years. He is now moving to
water and building a similarly-equiped trimaran kayak system at UCSD.

His book describes the state-of-the-art of 2-3 years ago; check him out
locally for what's up currently. Also, there's a nice article in the
current issue of _Sailing_ magazine on Inmarsat satlinks. $5-6K for a
couple of pieces that plug in to a notebook PC and give you email/fax
connections globally (@ $US10/Kb !) if you absolutely, positively have to
get there...
