PILOT PROJECT TESTS INTERNET-BASED
SYSTEM FOR ACCESSING GOVERNMENT INFORMATION
OTTAWA, May 19, 1994 _ Industry Minister John Manley
today announced the launch of a pilot project to evaluate an
Internet-based service for informing Canadians about the
workings of Canada's federal government.
"The Open Government Pilot represents an important step
in making government information, officials and Members of
Parliament more accessible to Canadians and others by using
networks such as the Internet," said Mr. Manley. "The
project will enable us to develop and test methods for using
the information highway to inform and educate the public
about government".
The Open Government Pilot provides access to various
segments of the federal government including: the House of
Commons, the Senate, the Supreme Court, and federal
departments and agencies.
Intended to be an information tool, it is available in
a variety of formats over the global Internet, however, it
has been designed to take advantage of a multimedia,
hypertext application called World-Wide-Web.
The Open Government Pilot is accessible over the
Internet at several sites including the Industry Canada host
site, the Universities of New Brunswick, Montreal, Calgary,
and British Columbia and the Canadian Centre for Inland
Water (Environment Canada). It will also be available at
the Helsinki Public Library in Finland and interest has been
expressed in hosting the Pilot at the University of Lausanne
in Switzerland.
Internet is a global system of networks consisting of
approximately 10,000 interconnected networks and serves over
30 million users in 152 countries. There are approximately
one million users in Canada.

A L'INFORMATION GOUVERNEMENTALE AU MOYEN D'INTERNET
OTTAWA, le 19 mai 1994 -- Le ministre de l'Industrie,
John Manley, a annonce aujourd'hui le lancement d'un projet-
pilote visant a evaluer un service offert via Internet et
ayant pour objet d'informer les Canadiens des activites du
gouvernement federal.
" Le projet Gouvernement Ouvert represente un pas
important vers une plus grande accessibilite a l'information
gouvernementale, aux fonctionnaires, aux deputes et aux
senateurs grace a l'utilisation de reseaux comme Internet, a
affirme M. Manley. Il nous permettra de mettre au point et
de mettre a l'essai des methodes pour utiliser l'autoroute
de l'information en vue d'informer et d'eduquer le public en
matiere d'activites gouvernementales. "
Le projet-pilote consiste en fait en un guichet d'acces
unique a diverses composantes du gouvernement federal,
notamment la Chambre des communes, le Senat, la Cour supr me
et les ministeres et organismes federaux.
Con u pour etre un instrument d'education, il est
accessible sous diverses formes grace a Internet, qui
s'etend dans le monde entier. Il a toutefois ete
expressement mis au point pour tirer profit d'une
application hypertexte multimedia appelee World-Wide-Web.
Il est possible d'acceder au projet-pilote au moyen
d'Internet a partir de plusieurs endroits : Industrie Canada
(point central), les universites du Nouveau-Brunswick, de
Montreal, de Calgary et de la Colombie-Britannique ainsi que
le Centre canadien des eaux interieures (Environnement
Canada). Il sera aussi possible d'y acceder a partir de la
bibliothEque publique d'Helsinki, en Finlande. Enfin,
l'Universite de Lausanne, en Suisse, s'est aussi dite
interessee par ce projet.
Internet est un systEme mondial de reseaux consistant
en quelque 10 000 reseaux interconnectes et desservant plus
de 30 millions d'utilisateurs dans 152 pays. Au Canada, il y
a environ un million d'utilisateurs.
