I don't think you're nit-picking.
I do think this is a very imperfect medium that often draws people
towards reading what they think the other person might have said,
rather than what they wrote. Nuances of language become opaque rather
readily.
However, I do accept the judgement that if someone does not understand
one's writing it is fair to assume the blame lie with the author.
