I was thinking about the same thing. Many people name their desktop or
personal computers after something related to their off-hours hobby. My
machine name at GE was spyder.crd.ge.com, "spyder" in reference to Porsche's
race cars of the fifties. (More a wild when-I'm-the-next-Bill-Gates kind of
fantasy than a hobby. I wonder how big his new garage is going to be???)
After a few moments consideration, however, it occurred to me that this
might not be such a good idea. Suppose I'm wild about greyhound dogs:
skip_montanaro@greyhound.dogs.pets.pvt
That presents two problems. First, there is probably not enough fan-out into
the fourth (dog breed) level to avoid name clashes. Second, I become a
potential target of selective spam artists. I envision Purina sending out
electronic dolar-off coupons for all their various pet chows to all email
addresses in all of *.{horse,dog,cat,deer,cow,pig}.pets.pvt domains.
There is, of course, the further possibility that my wife is really who's
interested in greyhounds, so we have a kennel, but she takes the business
after the divorce, and I'm stuck with a very inappropriate domain name later
on. (This happened to a fellow I knew in college. Instead of a domain name,
however, he got stuck with the kennel...)
