Is that really a constraint we need to accept in a re-design?
Well, hey, then reverse the tuples. It's still as sensible as anything
we have now (to the human eye.)
We had to get used to the current DNS order also and many humans
thought the current DNS scheme looked backwards way back when
(consider what JANET did with the UK domain naming for years.)
Or software can reverse the tuples. They're just strings even tho they
look like numbers. A transition phase could tag something on the end
like maybe .# or something, or the front. Or all digit host names not
in square brackets (using current e-mail rules) shall henceforth be
assumed to be these new addresses (that even leans in favor of the
innocent, innocents don't generally type in IP numbers directly.)
None of that seems daunting to me when compared with changes that
would be necessitated by other proposed schemes.
At least this one can almost certainly be solved at the lexical level
so the underlying question is whether or not the goal is worthwhile
given that it seems transition solutions shouldn't be too difficult
and some have even been proposed (i.e. in this note.)
Good point though. I just think it's solvable and not a showstopper.
