DES is Data Encryption Standard. It has been a FIPS Pub Standard for
15+ years. There are implementations of it all over the net.
look in soda.berkeley.edu in the /pub/crypto directories.
A while ago, there was a congressional hearing on export regulations of
encryption software. Using a dialup modem the congresscritters were
shown how to use FTP to pull a version from Finland and other sites,
compile it, and use it. All off a laptop, and in about 5 minutes.
Of course, if you export DES, you can go to jail.
This is mostly (ok lots) off com-priv's charter, but as
more and more business is done on the net, encryption will
be part of it. A very big part IMHO.
