And why is an end to retailing (or at least a major paradigm shift)
the same as an end to the economy?

The fact is that if large enough numbers of people want to order stuff
by computer, the manufacturer will simply eliminate the very expensive
retail channel -- possibly to the benefit of the consumer.

Unless the retail channel performs a function (service, support) in which
case it survives, and not on price.
