One suggestion I have is that people make more use of high compression
jpeg's with a high quality version of each or most pictures available.
Even highly compressed jpeg's are fairly recognizable and can be as
small as 3-15 K, which translates to 1-8 seconds for a typical link.
Setting some variable or using some other www friendly method to
choose between the high quality and economical modes would be great.
Another help would be some notification of the size of an image before
downloading.
