4/22/1994 - Chicago, IL
MCSNet(sm) announced today that it has agreed to provide Internet service
to the North Suburban Library System's member libraries, encompassing the
Northeast portion of the state of Illinois.
This service is expected to provide patron access to the Internet in a
large number of the public libraries in the region, as well as advanced
Internet capabilities for the librarians and staff of these institutions.
MCSNet's Karl Denninger said:
"This is a ground-breaking initiative. North Suburban and MCSNet
are effectively extending connectivity to the public-at-large in
a library setting across large geographic areas.
With this initiative we state clearly that we are here to serve not
only the commercial interests in a community, but also the public
interest. Access for library patrons is an ideal to which many
have aspired, but few have achieved.
North Suburban has taken the lead with this endeavor, and we are
pleased to be able to serve the system in this capacity."
Installation of service at member library sites is underway now, with
the first completions and on-line dates expected to occur within 60 days.
MCSNet is also providing Internet-related support services including
electronic mail handling for members, gopher, HTTP and FTP servers,
network engineering support and the development of network applications
for the use of member libraries and patrons.
