I regularly use "digital cash." Last night, I purchased groceries
by handing the teller my ATM card. Stopping on my way home, I stuck
my ATM card into a gas pump and drew off 20 gallons after typing my
PIN on the attached keypad.
The same card lets me apply debits to my bank checking account at
any Visa merchant, which includes almost all restaurants, taverns,
and other retail establishments in this area. The only traditional
cash I carry around is quarters for video games.
Soon enough, Oakland panhandlers will be asking me for a swipe on
their cellular validators.
