I have done my own research today on this subject. On the basis of that
I can agree with Brock's assertion that the Gov Ops committee is
serious.
Conyers has given NSF until April 27th to reply. After that I predict
there will be follow up questions. LORD it is NICE to see SOMEONE on
the HILL finally pay attention to the cozy arrangementss of the past few
years. Maybe director Lane will send Conyers the identity of the review
panel *AND* their complete report and save him the trouble of having
to request it later.
The committee however does need to understand that the conflict of
interest question **as presently phrased** doesn't hold water.
Another funny thing. Don Lindberg's Office at NLM today responded to a
FOIA request from me for all recordss of communications at the NSF
Directors level, in the CISE program and in the DNCRI division on MERIT,
IBM, MCI, ANS, NSF 93-52, etc etc. (Lindberg you see is supposed to
give NSF policy direction as transmitted form OSTP.) The time period of the
request covered from July 92 to the present.
Gosh. Lindberg could find only one email document - a March 18, 1994 request
to Mel Ciment for NSF press releases on the solicitation.
Also this morning a response from NSF to a request for all traffic on the
same matter with Lindberg since July 1992.
Gee. All NSF could find was Ciments reply to Lindberg's March 18, 1994
request!
Nice coincidence. Be even nicer if we could find out who is making the
policy!
