I'm not sure what a net connection would offer beyond what a modem and
a 1-800 number could do. A net connection is going to sock you with
a fairly heavy charge, even if it isn't used that much. It is true that
some academic institutions have brain-damaged phone systems and lack
outdial modems (but so do some hotels :-). First, I would suggest you
try a simple dial-up access method, and promote it among those academic
institutions. After you get some more experience with "remote access"
and what kind of traffic to expect, then work with the academic institutions
to set up a net connection. If those institutions have found such a service
valuable, you will be pleasantly surprised at what obstacles are magically
removed.
