G.K. Chesterton once observed that there are some questions so fundamental
that one is always at a loss for an answer; his example was the question,
"Why do you prefer civilization to savagery?" The only answer to such a
question, he said, is to look around wildly and stammer, "Well, there are
lamp-posts . . . and policemen . . . and omnibuses . . . ."
Similarly, I have heard that Louis Armstrong, when asked, "What is jazz?"
shook his head and replied, "Brother, if you gotta ask, you ain't never
gonna know."
