Recently in the IETF statement on AUPs that Bill Manning (as I recall) sent
to com-priv, some people thought that the CoVis AUP definition of the
Internet was not entirely correct. Barry Fishman, the AUP author, would
like to improve it. He would like some comments and suggestions on this
altered section regarding the "pupose of the Internet."

My question, after some thought, is why is a Purpose of the Internet
statement necessary for the CoVis AUP? Their AUP has no bearing on the rest
of the Internet, and governs all CoVis use. Maybe an NSFNet definition
only is a better choice?

I'm glad I'm not involved in this AUP stuff, I let someone else worry
about what "color" the packets are.

Subject: Revision of CoVis AUP -- please comment

Lisa,

I have made some minor changes to the first two sections of the CoVis AUP that
I hope will address the concerns of com-priv participants. What do you think?
The area where I believe I need the most guidance is in determining the
"purpose of the Internet." Back when I had the misunderstanding of the
relationship between the Internet and the NSFNet (yesterday), I knew what to
say here. How would you define the purpose of the Internet?

Thanks,

Barry

P.S. Feel free to share with com-priv.
-----------------------------------------

1.Purpose of the Internet and NSFNet
The Internet (a global network made up of many smaller contributing networks)
and its services are intended to support the open exchange of information
among many different kinds of institutions all over the world. The
NSFNet,which is one of the networks that make up the Internet, is intended for
research and education in and among US research and instructional
institutions, plus research arms of for-profit firms when engaged in open
scholarly communication and research.

2.Purpose of the CoVis Network
The purpose of the CoVis Network is to facilitate communications and
collaboration between members of the CoVis community. Network use is
primarily intended for the support of project work conducted for participating
CoVis classes, and far less significantly for other purposes that students and
teachers determine to be of educational value. The CoVis Network has limited
resources, and CoVis classrooms have limited time available for
network-supported teaching and learning activities. Any use of the network
which adversely affects its operation in pursuit of teaching and learning or
jeopardizes its use or performance for other community members is prohibited,
and may result in the loss of network privileges. It is not acceptable to use
the CoVis Network for commercial or for-profit services.

An FYI for those of us who are more forgetful (like me!)
   The original statement said:

1. Purpose of the Internet
The Internet (a global network made up of many smaller
contributing networks) and its services are intended to
support open research and education in and among US
research and instructional institutions, plus research arms of
for-profit firms when engaged in open scholarly communication and
research. Use for other purposes, e.g. for-profit activity or
extensive personal business, is not acceptable.
