ANS and the CIX - have they really connected?

Gee, that would all seem reasonable to me.

Do the post office or telcos provide free services for university
alumni services? Do the costs of the CIX vaporize because the
university decides it would be nice to give these things away?

As to "community nets", I have little doubt it's all easier if someone
else can be stuck with the bill. At least if someone asked for a
computer for a freenet they'd offer the donator a tax write-off (no
problem with that.)

I have no problems with largesse, but let's agree that that's what it
is you are referring to. I suspect the CIX has expenses, and that
their staff likes to eat regularly, and as an organization is also
able to recognize the role and needs of academia, but let's at least
recognize the value inherent.

I believe a critical part of the maturing of this technology is the
realization that it's worth something. So long as we keep denying that
it remains a curio.
