The Association of Research Libraries (ARL), American Library Association
(ALA), and the equivalent association of public libraries are and have been
strongly supportive of electronic access to Government information. Rep.
Charlie Rose (D, NC) has introduced a bill (HR 2772) called "GPO Wide
Information Network for Data Online Act of 1991" ("GPO WINDO") to provide
for "...single point access to a wide range of government electronic
databases...". Hearings are underway in the Joint Committee on Printing
(JCP) now. NSF has testified that getting the GPO on the 'net together with
the 1400 Federal Depository Libraries would provide a robust and distributed
supplement to the "single point access". A September meeting is being set
up among NSF, JCP staff and GPO folk to discuss details of getting GPO
connected.
You can write to JCP for copies of hearing testimonies, and both ARL and ALA
will happily core dump to help you prepare for your talks if you want.
