Two problems with Joe's figures. First they cover all of high performance
computing. NREN is only a small fraction of the total. (About 500
million above what is now being spent). Second the figures from HR656 are
total expenditures (ie what is already being spent, plus new spending).
The figures in the Senate bill are new spending only. I haven't cross
checked every line item. What checking I have done seems to indicate that
you take what is being spent now in hpcc and add to it the senate
authorizations you get roughly the higher figures in the House bill which
appear to be the figures in joe's table. (the 1996 figure for EPA i think
also has a typo.)
The money being spent on NREN is only about 1/5 to 1/6 the totals listed.
Otherwise a good article.
