Sorry I haven't responded sooner, but I've been swamped in e-mail
while I've been trying to get some work done. The network service
business is hard work :-)
Kent is essentially correct...
The T3 network installations described in some earlier postings are
currently proceeding and will result in 12 core-nodes (CNSS) located in
POPs across the country. These T3 core nodes will be interconnected via
T3 circuits, and serve 16 NSF sponsored midlevel network T3 end-nodes
(ENSS), as well as additional ANS and CO+RE customer attachments.
ANS is working on this in conjunction with many other hard working
folks from Merit, NSF, MCI, IBM, Cisco, the local exchange carriers,
and the midlevel networks. Eight of the NSF sponsored T3 midlevel
network attachments are already online. These attachments support
multiple midlevel networks which interconnect at the following
locations:
Argonne, IL
Palo Alto, CA
Ithaca, NY
Ann Arbor, MI
Urbana-Champaign, IL
Cambridge, MA
Pittsburgh, PA
San Diego, CA
The remaining eight NSF sponsored T3 end-node network attachments
will be installed in the coming months, and serve multiple midlevel
networks. They are located in these cities:
College Park, MD
Princeton, NJ
Houston, TX
Boulder, CO
Salt Lake City, UT
Seattle, WA
Atlanta, GA
We expect that this infrastructure will continue to benefit many R&E
as well as commercial users of the Internet.

PS: Randy, ANS is actually pretty far from the Sound -- we're much
farther west (Just due east, and slightly North, of Tarrytown,
which is on the Hudson).
