there are a few for Linux, you can look at
sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/ups for them.  most of these programs
have a bit of a "do it yourself" attitude, and talk in dumb mode through
the serial port, so there's a fair chance that porting them to another
Unix wouldn't be hard.

for APC's on Linux, apcupsd-3.3.0 is good and appears safe enough (the
only files it ever touches are /etc/apcupsd.conf and /etc/apcupsd.status),
but it's binary only.  it uses smart mode, so you can have up to date
info on the status of the UPS.
